Garlic - a True Superfood:
There has been more written about the wonderful benefits of garlic than any other food source known. Its history dates back 3,500 years. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was the first to write that garlic was an excellent medicine for eliminating tumors. It was used to protect against plague by monks in the Middle Ages. Garlic poultices were placed on wounds during World War II as an inexpensive, and apparently quite effective replacement for antibiotics which were scarce during wartime.
Recent studies on garlic have shown that it eliminates various tumors, lowers blood sugar levels, lowers harmful fats in the blood, and prevents clogging of the arteries. Researchers have also shown that allicin (the organic compound which gives garlic its aroma and flavor) acts as a very potent antioxidant and anti
-carcinogen.
Garlic is incredibly beneficial to your immune system because it offers a triple-whammy: it is anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial! You should be eating garlic every day. One of the best things about garlic is that bacteria, viruses, and yeast build up no resistance to it, unlike with synthetic antibiotics.
It has been discovered that the diallyl sulfide in garlic reduces the formation of carcinogens in the liver (Cancer Research, 1988; 48:23). In addition, ajoene, another major compound of garlic has been shown to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in human leukemic cells.
We eat garlic in almost everything – dips, salad dressings, sauces, soups, wraps, you name it. But remember...cooking kills garlic’s cancer-fighting properties. There are cases on record where cancer was beaten with a good detox program and garlic alone. Each morning, my family drinks our “orange potion” consisting of the juice of 10 fresh squeezed oranges, 1 fresh lemon, 12 cloves of garlic, a large root of ginger, and extra virgin olive (or flaxseed) oil. Add about a dozen cubes of ice, blend for about 60 seconds, and you've got one powerful drink to start the day!
For optimal benefits, garlic should be fresh since the active ingredient is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic cloves. In other words, garlic capsules are basically useless.
